Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of shallow form with a round but stable base, squat walls, and a thick rim. The exterior surfaces are decorated with beige and tan hues as well as quartets of diagonal stripes in alternating russet and black hues. The interior surfaces are decorated with burgundy, burnt ochre, and black serrations surrounding the rim as well as a white-ground basin surface upon which a large and abstract head - replete with enormous eyes, 2 snake-like tongues, and serpentine hair tendrils - is presented. Size: 6.25" W x 1.75" H (15.9 cm x 4.4 cm)

  • Condition: Repaired with light chipping and adhesive residue along break lines. Several nicks and spalls across exterior surfaces, with light fading to pigment, and abrasions to face within basin. Nice preservation to pigment in most areas.
