Description:

**Originally Listed At $950**

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A charming, hand-built ceramic Venus figure depicted nude and sitting upon ample buttocks with straight legs and painted hands resting on her abdomen, perhaps intended to direct attention towards her womb. Note how her genitalia is delineated with applied black pigment, further highlighting her sex. The figure is finely decorated with vivid polychrome details in white, red, and black hues atop a creamy beige ground. Her expressive visage is composed of almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and a smiling mouth beneath a tab-shaped coiffure. Female figures are relatively rare in Nazca pottery, making this piece particularly unique. Size: 3.3" W x 6" H (8.4 cm x 15.2 cm); 6.9" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Dr. James Tait Goodrich collection, Grandview-on-Hudson, New York, USA, 1980s - 2020, thence by descent
