Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 250 to 540 CE. A wonderful polychrome terracotta kero (also spelled quero, qero, qiru) vessel boasting an impressively painted iconographical program, the exterior walls with a central register depicting three camelids, their heads and abdominal regions targeted by arrows (note the poor camels' bulging eyes and flailing body language) with detached tails featured between the creatures. Above and below are narrower registers occupied by repeated stylized trophy heads and/or tasters. All is delineated in an abstract style characteristic of the Nazca artisans, in a beautiful color palette comprised of red, orange, grey, peach, white, and black hues. Quite an unusual and dramatic hunting scene! Size: 4.75" in diameter at rim x 6.75" H (12.1 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Boulder, CO, USA collection; ex-private Lawrence Buchanan and Dr. Enrique Von Kiguel collection; acquired 1970 to 1980
