Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A hand-built pottery figure depicting a stylized woman with delineated legs, arms, and genitalia. She sits with extended legs, holds stocky arms down to her sides, and has a broad neck line. Almond-shaped eyes, a rectangular mouth, a prominent nose, and red-painted lashes/tears - perhaps ritual tattooing marks or scarification - comprise her serene visage, and her head is topped with a brown-painted coiffure that drapes to the middle of her back. Female figures are rather rare in Nazca pottery artistry, making this piece particularly special. Size: 3.5" W x 3.8" H (8.9 cm x 9.7 cm); 5.25" H (13.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-private Gill collection, Orlando, Florida, USA; ex-Art for Eternity, New York, New York, USA; ex-Sotheby's, New York "Important Pre-Columbian Art" auction (November 27 and 28, 1984, lot 434).
