Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 400 CE. An intriguing, hand-built pottery cup with a round but stable base, a corseted body, and a thin, flared rim surrounding the deep basin. The bottom of the base features eight protruding bulbs that represent lucuma - a sweet fruit that grows plentifully in South America - that alternate between red, beige, and white hues. Most of the body is decorated with a pair of mythical killer whale deities that combine elements of the whale along with some human components like the round eyes and fingered hands, all in orange, red, purple, and black hues. Size: 3.6" W x 4.4" H (9.1 cm x 11.2 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA collection, purchased in April 2016; ex-Sean Crane collection, Bakersfield, California, USA
