Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A lovely polychrome bridge spout stirrup vessel of a globular form with a rounded base featuring an amazing painted program depicting an Anthropomorphic Mythical Being, also referred to as AMB, flying about collecting “trophy heads” along the way. Trophy heads are symbolic of opposing warriors captured or killed in battle – it is celebratory iconography at its core, highlighting the prowess and powers of Nazca warrior class. The base is painted a light orange, delineated by a russet red border. The Anthropomorphic Mythical Being is painted in hues of russet red, black, brown, and gray atop a cream ground. A delicate bridge spout it set at its top in an accenting russet red hue. A gorgeous example! Size: 6" W x 7.25" H (15.2 cm x 18.4 cm)
