Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A charming, hand-built pottery bowl with a round but stable base, tall walls, a shallow basin, and a thin, lightly flared rim. The interior of the bowl is decorated with solid red slip as is the center of the base. Around the exterior is a fine register of 4 longnecked birds with plump bodies, tapering feathers, and triangular beaks, all presented in a palette of orange, blue, red, grey, and black hues atop a cream ground. Size: 7.2" W x 2.5" H (18.3 cm x 6.4 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

  • Condition: Vessel professionally repaired from multiple pieces with several areas of restoration as well as extensive resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor nicks to base, walls, and rim, with fading to some areas of pigmentation, and light encrustations. Nice earthen and manganese deposits throughout.
