Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A Nazca polychrome terracotta bowl, finely painted with four parrots perched in profile along the exterior walls, all delineated in a vibrant color palette of red, orange, grey, black, and white hues - the interior a warm russet red and presenting nice burnishing marks. The ancients of the Andes held parrots in high esteem. Not only were they thought to be incarnations of sky deities for their ability to fly well above the tree line, but they were also prized for their brilliant plumage.
