Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Nazca culture, Phases 6 to 7, ca. 425 to 550 CE. A beautiful ceramic aryballos painted with interesting iconography. Around its shoulder is a repeated sequence of star-shaped mace heads. Three tiny loops extend from the shoulder, allowing the vessel to be suspended. During the Nazca "Proliferous Strain" period of iconography, abstract elements became parts of many motifs - see the tassels radiating from each mace - and military themes like these weapons became common subjects, indicating a shift in the priorities of the society. Size: 5" W x 6.45" H (12.7 cm x 16.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, collected in 1950 to the 1960s
