Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A fascinating ritual object of a slender form that is carved from a human bone, probably from the tibia, that was perhaps used as a shamanic wand. The tall object has a slightly flared base, an upper body adorned with incised diagonal striations, and a figural handle depicting a crouching human skeleton. The skeletal figure holds both arms beneath the chin of the massive head, and circular eyes rest above a triangular nasal cavity and two rows of etched teeth. Smooth patina envelops the entire carving. Size: 1.125" W x 7.75" H (2.9 cm x 19.7 cm); 8.2" H (20.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, acquired prior to 2009; ex-Arte Xibalba, Sarasota, Florida, USA
