Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, late Nazca to early Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A charming, hand-built pottery jar from the very end of the Nazca empire. The vessel is defined by a stable circular base, an apple-shaped body with a rounded shoulder, and a tall chimney spout with a thick rim. The body depicts a stylized, almost humorous human skull with concave discoid eyes, a protruding nasal bone, recessed cheek lines, and a slender mouth, all presented in black and white slip. A trio of red zigzagging lines project upward and laterally outward from the nasal bone, and a red triangle decorates each cheek. The spout is adorned with thick red pigment and the spout base is ringed with a thin white circle. Size: 3.2" W x 5.125" H (8.1 cm x 13 cm).
