Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A lovely high karat gold ornament handcrafted by the ancient Nazca of Peru. Nazca metalworkers beat gold into thin sheets which were cut to create silhouettes. These artisans preferred to keep surfaces smooth and reflective, with nice repoussé work to provide attractive decoration. Decorated gold feathers like this may have been incorporated into ornaments and masks which were worn to make the wearer appear to have a golden features, during transformation ceremonies carried out by the shamans who were such a popular subject in Nazca art.
