Description:

Pre-Columbian, Nazca culture, Southern Peru, ca. 200-600 CE. Polychrome pottery bridge-spout vessel in the form of a sweet bird, whose feathers are elaborately hand painted in six distinct shades of red, black, grey, almond brown, chocolate brown and cream. The Nazca replaced post-firing resin painting with pre-firing slip painting making for a great deal of experimentation to learn which slips produced certain colors. Note the painstaking technique required to cover this bird with such a wide array of painted geometric motifs in such a wide range of hues! 6-1/2"L x 5"H x 2-3/4"W
