Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A terracotta figurine depicting a fierce male warrior or shaman. While this gent's protective gear suggests that he is a warrior prepared for battle, the pointed headdress with its hornlike protrusions suggests that he may also possess shaman status. Perhaps he is prepared for spiritual conflict in the unseen realm against illness, malevolent forces, or the like. Since the Nayarit was a shaft tomb culture, it is plausible that this piece was interred with the deceased to symbolically represent shamans engaged in activity for the benefit of the deceased. The armbands, legbands, belt, loincloth, and pectoral may indicate body armor or the regalia of a shaman. Size: 6-3/8"H x 4"W. Provenance: Ex-private Colorado Springs, CO collection. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109427
