Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished terracotta rattle meant to be shaken during ceremonial events. The instrument is comprised of a slender handle, a gradually-widening neck, and a globular rattle head which terminates in a nubbin top. Eighteen miniscule rattle holes are perforated around the rattle head, allowing the small balls held within to emit sound when jostled. Custom lucite display stand included. Size: 2.5" W x 5.375" H (6.4 cm x 13.7 cm); 6.625" H (16.8 cm) on included custom stand.
