Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, San Sebastian type, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Nude except for ear and nose ornaments, this female figure presents a kneeling posture with hands placed above her abdominal region, perhaps representing the birthing positon. Her face and body are meticulously covered with black tattoos or body paint of intricate, stylistic geometric designs. With breasts characteristically placed just beneath her armpits, a protruding pregnant belly, and delineated genitalia, she is most definitely female. Her visage presents pierced eyes, arched modeled brows, a pronounced nose with nosering, slitted open mouth, exaggerated chin and jawline, and an incised caplike coiffure. Given that she may be giving birth, her focussed expression is quite apropos! Size: 5" W x 8.75" H (12.7 cm x 22.2 cm)
