Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ixtlan del Rio, ca 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built polychrome terracotta figure, depicting a seated female with an expressive visage and an open mouth suggesting that she is either singing, speaking, or chanting. She holds platters that are generously filled with food offerings in both hands. Although her upper body is nude with a protruding perhaps pregnant belly and revealed breasts signifying her fertility, she is elaborately adorned with a headband, armbands, round ear ornaments, a nosering, a beaded necklace, and a lower body wrap. The level of detail is impressive, i.e. the zigzag motif on her headband, the spiraled and striated tattoos upon her face, chest, shoulders, and arms, vertical stripes on the offering bowls, and dotted earspools - all done in a style distinct to the Ixtlan del Rio variety of Nayarit figures.
