Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, ca. 200-300 CE. Mother and child iconography is relatively rare among the ancients of West Mexico, and in this example, the pairing is particularly intimate as the infant is nursing, emphasizing the maternal nature of the mother. Note that the female depicted is donning rather large ear ornaments , necklace, nose ring, as well as black body paint or tattooing, indicating she is an individual of elite status. The figure also shows influence of the Jalisco Ameca style with its oversized head and prominent forehead. The figures were finely slipped with red pigment and smoothly burnished. Size: 11-3/4" H. Provenance: Ex- R. Kelley collection, Denver, CO. Mr. Kelley is a world renown artist, published in a number of catalogues and books. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
