**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ixtlan del Rio, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built redware female figure depicted kneeling with both hands on her broad abdomen, just below her prominent breasts. Bare-chested, the figure wears a vertically striped skirt, armbands, and a nose ring as she faces forward. Her thick neck rises from square shoulders supporting a sizeable head that displays target-motif eyes, a pointed nose, and an open mouth with a bottom row of jagged teeth, all adorned with liberal remains of black-painted striations. A huge pair of ears with undulating edges flank her stylized visage, while a broad headband wraps around her elongated forehead. Liberal remains of white-painted details further embellish the ancient figure. Size: 6.6" W x 10.5" H (16.8 cm x 26.7 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.

Provenance: ex-Claude Cassuto collection, France, acquired before 1969

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with some areas of restoration. Expected light abrasions and a few nicks, all commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with great remaining pigments and detail. TL holes to left side of posterior and just below headband on verso of head.
