Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built redware pottery figure - known as a pensador ("thinker") shown seated upon bent legs with a pair of conical protrusions emanating from beneath the posterior. Highly burnished and covered in orange, red, and brown pigment, the figure leans forward in a pensive manner with rounded shoulders dominating the overall profile while holding one arm up to their mouth in a gesture of deep thought. The elongated head features a pair of slit-form eyes, a bulbous nose adorned with a septum ornament, a band of black pigment across the eyes, and ears embellished with a series of thick earrings, all beneath an incised coiffure. Remains of dark pigment form an intricate vestment across the front of the chest with vertical bars filled with petite circular spots. An interesting example of ancient West Mexican pottery! Size: 6.625" W x 12.8" H (16.8 cm x 32.5 cm)
