Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery male figure shown with a recognizably somber attitude, and a traditional pose of mourning. The nude man sits with both legs bent toward his chest and arms resting on his knees. Applied bangles adorn each upper arm; around the neck is an applied necklace; earrings and a headdress adorning the head. An opening on the op of t he headdress serves as a vent hole for the firing process. The sad visage is further embellished with impressed eyes, a large nose, and a slightly open mouth. The body is painted with deep red and black pigments, with alternating bands of color on the arms and torso. A special example from this shaft tomb culture.
