Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A stupendous sculptural work of the Nayarit culture of ancient Mesoamerica. A seated male hunchback figure, nude except for an ornate headband with round central applique inscribed with a four-pointed star, with a cerebral expression perhaps indicative of a trance-like or even deceased state, given the death bubble protruding from his lips. Nicely modeled and finished in a bichrome finish of red and orange. Hunchbacks were revered in the Pre-Columbian world as their deformities were regarded as evidence that these individuals were touched by the gods. Size: 3-1/2"L (8.9 cm) x 4-1/2"W (11.43 cm) x 7-1/8"H (18.1 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Houston, TX collection acquired at auction or local gallery between 1982 and 1994. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108135
