Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A striking ceramic figural jar standing on three short legs. The body of the bowl is wide around the middle and smooth. Its neck has two necklaces around it, topped by a head shaped in the classic Nayarit shaft tomb figure style. The head has a prominent nose with nose ring and ears studded by multiple earrings each. Black and white pigment atop a dark red slip give the figure what appear to be tattoos or scars on the face and on the body of the bowl a dense pattern of concentric circles. The hair is incised onto the top of the head, with a round opening in the top for pouring liquids. This item was probably made to be an offering in a tomb, perhaps containing some sacred libation. Size: 7.4" W x 10.3" H (18.8 cm x 26.2 cm)

Provenance: private collection of Lupita Tovar, silent screen actress of the 1930s, Bel-Air, California, USA
