Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ixtlan del Rio, ca 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built polychrome terracotta figure, depicting a standing female elaborately adorned with a headband, round earspools, 'beaded' pectoral, scoop-neck collar, skirt, and armbands. She presents an expressive visage with wide-open eyes, a protruding pointy nose, and an open mouth suggesting that she is either singing, speaking, or chanting. The level of detail is impressive, i.e. the striped motif on her headband, circular motif on her earspools, and intricately patterned skirt - all done in a style distinct to the Ixtlan del Rio variety of Nayarit figures. A fabulous example from the ancients of West Mexico. Size: 3.625" W x 6.25" H (9.2 cm x 15.9 cm)

Compare to examples depicted in "The Shaft Tomb Figures of West Mexico" by H. Von Winning.
