Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ixtlan del Rio, ca 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built polychrome terracotta figure depicting a standing female with a characteristically wide body holding a pottery cylinder upon her right shoulder, all in red slip with cream and traces of black decoration. She is elaborately adorned with a striped headband, elaborate ear ornaments, nosering, multi-strand 'beaded' pectoral, and decorated skirt, and presents an expressive visage with wide-open eyes, a curved protruding nose, and a smiling grin. The sculptor made a point of emphasizing her pointy breasts, a sign of female fertility. The level of detail is impressive, i.e. the diagonally striped motif on her headband and the chevron pattern adorning her skirt - all done in a style distinct to the Ixtlan del Rio variety of Nayarit figures. A very lively figure created by the ancients of West Mexico. Size: 6.125" W x 8.25" H (15.6 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Mitchell collection
