Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Protoclassic Period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hollow-formed pottery figure of a warrior standing upon a pair of bent conical legs and a third 'base' leg on the verso. The warrior holds a club in attenuated arms, and around his torso rests a set of barrel-shaped armor decorated with elaborate linear, stippled, and fretted motifs in vivid red, black, and cream-hued pigment. The characteristically elongated head bears coffee-bean-shaped eyes, a prominent nose with an enormous nose ring, cupped ears with clustered earrings, a petite mouth, and several vertical stripes in white and red, all beneath a similarly-striped helmet bearing a pair of pronged horns. Size: 4.6" W x 9.375" H (11.7 cm x 23.8 cm).
