Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Ixtlan Del Rio, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built pottery figure seated with legs spread and nude, but of ambiguous gender. The elongated head features a pair of slit-form eyes and mouth, with the right arm reaching up to the lips- as if the figure is deep in thought; sometimes the gesture is interpreted as consuming or smoking a hallucinogenic substance. The helmet like coiffure has a circular vent hole in the top that leads into his hollow body and the surface is slipped in an orange-red hue. Size: 4" L x 3" W x 6.25" H (10.2 cm x 7.6 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Sara and Victor Friedman collection, New York City, New York, USA, acquired in the 1960s
