Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A large and impressive terracotta female figure sitting on a two-legged stool with a characteristically wide torso, her hands positioned upon her abdomen just beneath her breasts and above her abdomen and delineated genitalia, as the artist most likely intended to emphasize her locii of fertility. She is nude except for shell-shaped ear ornaments, a crescent-shaped nose ring, and extensive tattoo marks over her body (note the nice spiral motifs adorning her legs and the striated patterns on her shoulders). Her expressive face with coffee bean shaped eyes, long curved nose, and open mouth as if singing or chanting is framed by an incised, straight coiffure. A gorgeous example of the San Sebastian red type. Size: 9" W x 15.5" H (22.9 cm x 39.4 cm)

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired between 1969 to 1985
