Description:

**Originally Listed At $600**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery figure of a seated nude man with dramatically bent legs and an arched back revealing dozens of protruding ribs and spinal discs. The poignant countenance presents with large, yellow-painted eyes, a prominent nose, bulging cheeks with a stippled surface. The pitted skin has been identified by some researchers as a representation of serious infections related to venereal diseases such as syphilis. Those suffering from syphilis will often exhibit an inflamed rash and serious lesions across their skin that can lead to disfigurement, muscle wasting, and emaciation. The figure holds a satchel-shaped object in both hands as it dangles below his chin. Size: 6.5" L x 3.8" W x 8.8" H (16.5 cm x 9.7 cm x 22.4 cm)

Provenance: private Reinsmoen collection, Clear Lake, Iowa, USA, acquired through descent from Robert Anderson, acquired prior to 2000
