Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, Ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A handsome seated terracotta figure in the Chinesco style - representing some of the most desirable West Mexican pottery available. This example presents a characteristically angular, oversized face crowned by an incised coiffure, the visage comprised of slit eyes and open mouth, a projecting straight nose, and black tattoos or face paint in triangular motifs over both eyes, nude except for the mult-lobed ear ornaments and body paint/tattoos adorning her torso and back. She sits with spread legs and hands to upraised knees, with voluptuous hips and buttocks indicative of fertility. An overall polychrome finish of red, orange, and black hues. A superb example! Size: 4.5" W x 5.5" H (11.4 cm x 14 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Private W. S. collection, Los Angeles, Ca
