Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. A hand-built pottery female figure of a characteristically abstract form with applied bands of jewelry on her arms, neck, and waist. She sits with ample thighs spread, holding her arms to her sides, her compressed torso supporting an enlarged head that has a vent opening into the hollow body. The minimalist face is composed of impressed linear eyes, and a protruding nose with septum piercings or ornaments, and she is slipped in hues of red and warm brown-beige. Size: 4.25" L x 2.5" W x 4.25" H (10.8 cm x 6.4 cm x 10.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000
