Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco type, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery ocarina in the form of a charming dog sitting atop conical forelegs and nubbin hind legs. The portly pooch bears burnished surfaces and is decorated with linear and zigzagging motifs in hues of red, white, and brown. A mouthpiece atop the canine's head enables sound to emanate from a tone hole in front of its chest, and a pair of finger holes beneath the body allow the instrument to change its pitch. Size: 8.75" L x 4.25" W x 5.75" H (22.2 cm x 10.8 cm x 14.6 cm)
