Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit culture, Chinesca style ca. 200 BCE - 200 CE. Nayarit ceramic figures are known for their expressive gestures and active forms. This female figure is carrying a miniature vessel on her back as she sits on her bulbous bottom. Note how the artist accentuated her womb by highlighting her loincloth in white paint. Her fertility is further emphasized by the disproportionate size of her lower half and the fact that her short legs are of diminuitive scale relative to the rest of her form. This emphasis on the womb is a practice that goes back to pre-historic statuettes albeit for the most part in Europe, ie the Venus of Willendorf. 4 3/4"T x 4 1/4"W x 5 1/4"D
