Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, ca. 200 BCE to 100 CE. An impressive standing Chinesco pottery figure, among the most desirable ancient West Mexican pottery available. The form displays traits particular to the Chinesco style, with an angular large face, attenuated arms, small eyes and mouth relative to the more prominent nose, attenuated arms with hands placed upon a subtly distended belly (possible indication of pregnancy), and voluptuous hips also indicative of fertility. The entire piece boasts a beautiful polychrome finish of red and orange hues with fabulous circular motif created via negative resist and some buff areas on the back of the head and torso. A closer look reveals additional dark pigment on the face and body, most likely intended to represent tattoos. Custom, museum quality stand. Size: 4.75" W x 9.25" H (12.1 cm x 23.5 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on stand

Provenance: Ex - R. Gill collection acquired at Arte Primitivo Gallery, NYC
