Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 200 BCE to 300 CE. A hand built pottery figure, molded in a stylized and seated position, with folded arms on his knees. The surface has great remaining pigments- russet red with white stripes, with a helmet atop his head. Pottery figures like this one are from the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico, often discovered as part of burial caches. Some scholars have connected these dynamic sculptures of the living as a strong contrast to the skeletal remains whose space they shared, as if they mediated between the living and the dead. Size: 2.5" L x 1.25" W x 3.4" H (6.4 cm x 3.2 cm x 8.6 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private lifetime collection of Dr. Saul Tuttman and Dr. Gregory Siskind, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s
