Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming, well preserved ceramic figure of a shaman, shown seated in a hunched over posture, holding a staff horizontally across his lap and wearing a tall, double-horned hat - believed to be a sign of his social status. His body is painted with white-on-red motifs that perhaps indicate tattoos, since he is nude, with visible genitalia. Figures like this one would have been placed into the tombs dug in shafts beneath Nayarit households where family members were periodically interred; archaeologists believe that they were placed around the edges of the tomb facing inward, as if in conversation with the dead. Size: 3.65" W x 7.9" H (9.3 cm x 20.1 cm)
