Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A hand-built pottery warrior figure seated upon spread legs and a wide posterior. The upright figure wields a squat, triangular tumi in his right hand while supporting a rectangular shield atop his left knee. The raised ovoid head is wrapped along the forehead and chin with a tight headdress bearing a pair of protruding conical ornaments, and his head is topped with a discoid ornament featuring a tall central projection. Both the shield and headdress elements are embellished with white pigment atop the red-orange ground. Size: 7" W x 10.125" H (17.8 cm x 25.7 cm)

  • Condition: Repairs to front tip of tumi as well as top of headdress beneath discoid element, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Minor abrasions and fading to pigment on limbs, shield, body, and head, with light encrustations in several areas. Great preservation to overall form as well as pigment throughout.
