Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo, ca. early 20th century CE. A massive ring inlaid with an oval turquoise stone polished flat, the setting mounted on a substantial shank with a stamped pattern. The 92% silver is unmarked and quite heavy - 74 grams- suggesting this was probably an Old Pawn piece. The pawning system, particularly involving Native American Navajo jewelry and traders, was a significant economic practice in the American Southwest, especially from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. This system allowed Navajo people to use their handcrafted jewelry and other valuables as collateral for loans from trading posts. Size of stone: 2.2" L x 1.46" W (5.6 cm x 3.7 cm); band opening: 0.85" W (2.2 cm); US ring size 11; silver quality: 92%; weight: 74.2 grams
