Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Dine (Navajo), ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A fine sterling silver necklace with peyote bird medallions inlaid with coral and turquoise flakes. The double chain strand is strung with silver "pearl" style beads with a large bird at the center. Interestingly this bird's body also forms a naja and a tipi tent. These birds represent the peyote bird, a symbol of water, lightning, and visions - the motif is a southwestern version of the Northern Plains' thunderbird. This piece is wearable! Size of strand: 30" L (76.2 cm); pendant: 3" L x 2.25" W (7.6 cm x 5.7 cm); silver quality: 93% to 95%; weight: 240.9 grams
