Native American, Southwestern United States, Navajo tribe, ca. late 1960s to early 1970s CE. A hand-built squash blossom necklace of 86% to 94.7% silver, each strand bearing a double-row of silver spheres before merging into singular strands near the terminals. Each side of the composition bears 5 petite squash blossoms with inlaid turquoise pieces while the central lunate pendant - known as a "naja" - bears a total of 7 turquoise fragments. Size (necklace): 27.5" L (69.8 cm); (central pendant): 2.8" W x 2.75" H (7.1 cm x 7 cm); silver quality: 86% to 94.7%; total weight: 215.5

The Navajo word for the squash blossom bead literally means "bead that spreads out" and this tri-petal form first appeared around 1880. Initially the necklaces were rather simple with the tri-petal silver beads interspersed with rather plain beads. In time, stones were added to the blossom beads. According to the Navajo, the Naja is strictly decorative; however, it has always been held in high regard by the Navajo and other peoples. Additionally, scholars do know of a squash blossom petroglyph at Saguaro National Monument in Arizona and believe that the flower motif was introduced by the Spanish as a variation of the pomegranate flower blossom.
