Description:

Native American, Navajo culture, Irene Johns, May 20, 1978. This rug was created by Navajo artist Irene Johns (1918-1998) on May 20, 1978. Entitled "Mother Earth, Father Sky" it is a rug that represents a Navajo sandpainting. Also called dry painting, Navajo sandpainting means "places where the gods come and go" in the Navajo language. They are generally used in ceremonies when the gods are called upon to assist with healthy harvest and healing. The figures depicted in Navajo sandpaintings tell a story of Navajo mythology depicting sacred mountains where the deities, legendary visions, or dances and chants performed during rituals. Here we have depicted Mother Earth and Father Sky. 78" x 60"
