Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

North American, Southeastern United States, Tennessee, Late Archaic to Woodlands Period, ca. 5000 to 500 BCE. A knobbed lunate bannerstone perforated through the center, knapped and polished from a creamy white stone – the crescent shape and surface of the stone are undeniably moon-like. Bannerstones of various sizes and shapes have been found across the eastern part of North America, but their use is not fully understood. They may have served as tools to aid in hunting, but also probably had ritualistic or symbolic power. Size: 5" L x 2" W (12.7 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
