**First Time At Auction**

Native American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, Eastern Woodland & Archaic period, ca. 5000 BCE to 1500 CE. A great example of a hand knapped celt or axe head, pecked and polished from a dark black hardstone. The tool has a thick, convex body, and the broad faces taper to a thick butt opposite a flared cutting edge. Celts could be handheld tools for a variety of ritualistic or utilitarian tasks such as scraping, cutting, digging, or they could be hafted onto handles for greater leverage. This celt has great signs of age, the cutting edge has a smooth polish from use. Size: 4.5" L x 2" W (11.4 cm x 5.1 cm)
