Description:

North America, United States, mid to late 20th century CE. A festival or ritualistic mask / headdress believed to be from the Shawnee Nation, made from wood in the form of a stylized bear, with a rattle and cut out star shape implements. The surface is vibrant with angular features, and the headband holds the massive snout in place, the side flanges resting on the wearer's collarbone / chest area. The wood rattle functions intended - with raised bear prints on the exterior. The inside of the mask has a large circle in red and black, the symbolism, is unknown, but possibly related to Algonquin speaking tribes or the Shawnee. Very possible this was made for a Native American celebration such as a powwow. Size: 18" L x 10" W x 12.75" H (45.7 cm x 25.4 cm x 32.4 cm)
