Description:

Native American, Western United States, Nevada, Paiute or Washoe culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A beautiful beaded degikup gift basket made from plant fibers over coiled cane, the exterior completely beaded from base to rim in geometric motifs. Degikup style baskets are characterized by their flat base, rounded form, with a relatively small mouth; made using a centuries old coiling technique using native plants such as willow, fern, rosebud, and bracken. The seed beads were introduced with European trade and incorporated by using a netted stitch over the degikup basket surface. This purportedly came from the Stewart Indian School, a residential school that forced assimilation and taught vocational skills to Native children from 1890 to 1980. The in the 1936 the Wa-Pai-Shone Trading Post / Cooperative was opened on the campus and sold basketry and beaded artwork. Size: 3.5" Diameter x 2.2" H (8.9 cm x 5.6 cm)
