Description:

Native American, Western United States, Oklahoma, Osage people, ca. mid-20th century CE. A painted cradleboard with woven yarn straps and nickel-iron tacks. This was a secure place for the baby, swaddled in cloth and ties to the board with the woven sashes. Putting the child on the board for the first time was a special event that was celebrated by the family - being old enough to be swaddled on the cradleboard marked the survival of early infant diseases. This panel is missing the arched wood bow that attaches to the sides just below the painted motifs- but this would help shield from sun and could dangle bells or beads to distract / occupy the baby when awake. Size: 39.75" L x 11" W (101 cm x 27.9 cm)

Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection; ex-New York City, New York, USA auction, 1969
