Description:

Native American, South Central United States, Oklahoma, Osage people, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A parfleche bag of rectangular form, made from a single piece of dried cowhide that is folded with leather stitching along 2 sides, with attached yarn and horsehair tin cone tassels. This parfleche material was probably repurposed from a stagecoach traveling trunk - the surface is dotted with perforations from the brass tacks that decorated the hide and held it in place over the wooden trunk. The surface was painted by the Osage with vibrant triangular and rhomboid shapes. Some nomadic tribes had limited time to tan the buffalo hides they hunted, so they prepared parfleche, a type of rawhide. This rawhide was made by cleaning, dehairing, stretching, and sun-drying the skin, resulting in stiff but durable leather used for various items like bags and war shields. Size: 13" L x 13" W (33 cm x 33 cm)
