Native American, Midwestern United States, Knoxville Iowa, Old Copper Complex Culture, Late Archaic Period, ca. 3000 BCE. This is a massive copper conglomeration, or nugget, with pretty areas of gleaming golden hues. Most of the surface is an oxidized green with pitting and shallow cavities. This raw piece of ore was discovered near earthen mounds created by Native Americans. Most copper came from Michigan and was used for jewelry, tools, weapons, and trade. Copper was valuable likely served as a status symbol. A raw piece of this size was undoubtably treasured by ancient cultures. This nugget was found in 1897 by W.C. Gregory.
