Native American, Western United States, Northern California, Pomo people, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A hand-coiled and twined basket dish made from regional plants - sedge grass, fern root, willow, and/or bracken. Shell disc beads create a handle and are sewn to the rim and body with nacre shell tips. Pomo basketry with special materials such as shell, nacre, and feathers, were prized pieces that were often gifted during special occasions. This small basket is remarkable for the tight weave that demonstrates the painstaking skill required to make it. Size: 4.5" Diameter x 1" H (11.4 cm x 2.5 cm)
