Description:

Native American, Midwestern United States, Ohio River Valley, Hopewell / Post-Hopewell Moundbuilding cultures, Woodlands period, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. This stone effigy platform pipe depicts a raccoon perched on a curved base, with a receptacle carved into its back for smoking materials and an inhalation hole on the narrow platform edge. Historians believe animal effigies may have symbolized or empowered the pipe's owner, as the smoker would look directly into the raccoon's eyes as they inhaled. Smoking pipes were culturally significant in Eastern Woodland societies, and evidence of tobacco use in the region dates to ca. 100 to 200 CE, although earlier pipes were also used to smoke plants such as dogwood, juniper, sumac, and bearberry. Size: 3.65" L x 1.25" W x 1.5" H (9.3 cm x 3.2 cm x 3.8 cm)
